Bio
Amelia Rose Smith, a Charleston native, has been a formidable presence in the Southern art scene for over twenty years. Her artistic journey began with an art scholarship at Coker College in Hartsville, SC, where she honed a profound affinity for watercolor—an expressive medium that would become her signature. Upon completing her studies, Smith contributed her skills as an illustrator for the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources and other agencies, balancing professional obligations with a burgeoning career as a painter. By 1984, she transitioned fully to life as a dedicated artist, allowing herself the freedom to refine her medium and expand her artistic vision.
Smith's evolution as a painter has been shaped and inspired by her studies under a roster of distinguished artists, including Ovanes Berberian, Zoltan Szabo, Charles Movalli, Sondra Freckelton, Alex Powers, Joan Rothermel, Sherrie McGraw, and Rhett Thurman. Each of these mentors has left an indelible mark on her approach, nurturing her talent and instilling a drive for continual growth and exploration.
Today, Smith resides in South Carolina, where her studio overlooks the tranquil marshlands, providing a contemplative environment for her creative pursuits. Her life along the creeks and rivers, shared with her husband and sons, John and Peter, serves as a wellspring of inspiration, fueling a body of work that captures the Lowcountry’s landscapes and subtle rhythms with unparalleled sensitivity. Smith’s art is a testament to her dedication, capturing the beauty of her surroundings with a depth and grace that reflect her years of study, experience, and innate talent.
